Viniou Reviews

W. & J. Graham & Co’s 40 Years of Age Tawny is a celebration of expertise and patience, representing the highest expression of aged port from one of the Douro Valley’s most prestigious houses. Crafted from a blend of select red varietals native to the region—principally Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão—this cuvée is slowly matured in seasoned oak casks for an average of four decades. Over this prolonged aging, the wine evolves from vibrant ruby to deep amber, developing complex aromas and remarkable finesse. On the palate, you can expect a harmonious balance between honeyed notes of dried figs, toasted nuts, toffee, marmalade, and a subtle, smoky hint, all lifted by a fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age.

The Douro Valley, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the historic heartland of Portuguese port production. Its rugged schist slopes cascade down to the Douro River, which moderates the hot, dry summers typical of the continental climate. The stony soils reduce vine vigor and encourage deep root penetration, concentrating flavors in the small, thick-skinned grapes. Top port houses like Graham’s have harnessed these terroir characteristics for centuries, blending knowledge passed down through generations with innovative winemaking techniques.

A 40-year-old Tawny is a contemplative wine best appreciated with food that echoes its sophistication. Pair it with mature hard cheeses such as aged Manchego or Portuguese Queijo da Serra, or with desserts that highlight caramel and nutty flavors: think pecan pie, crème brûlée, or fig tart. It also shines alongside less traditional combinations like roasted almonds or bitter dark chocolate.

For optimal tasting, serve chilled at 12-14°C. Use a white wine glass to concentrate its complex aromatics, and savor slowly—this is a wine to linger over, allowing each evolving layer to reveal itself in the glass.
