Viniou Reviews

Weis Vineyards’ 2021 Cuvée Blaufränkisch from the Seneca Lake AVA in New York is an expressive and characterful red wine. Made from 100% Blaufränkisch (also known as Lemberger), this wine illustrates the variety’s ability to thrive in the relatively cool but favorable climate along the shores of Seneca Lake. The 2021 vintage benefited from a growing season marked by a temperate spring and a warm, dry summer, leading to ripening conditions ideal for Blaufränkisch's bright acidity and structured tannins. Fermentation and aging in stainless steel and neutral oak highlight the grape’s natural vibrancy, offering deep purple hues, lively aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, violet, and subtle notes of spice and earth.

Seneca Lake, situated in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, is renowned for its glacial soils and unique microclimate. The presence of the large, deep lake moderates temperature extremes, reducing the risk of frost and lengthening the ripening season—critical for varietals like Blaufränkisch that require extra time to fully develop complexity and phenolic maturity. The stony, well-drained soils impart a mineral backbone and finesse, while the region’s winemaking history dates to the 19th century with European immigrants who recognized the area’s potential.

This Blaufränkisch’s medium body and fresh acidity pair beautifully with a range of dishes. Classic pairings include roasted duck breast, grilled pork chops, and charcuterie, while its peppery finish complements hearty stews or a mushroom risotto. For a regional twist, try it alongside New York strip steak or local, wood-fired pizza with smoked sausage and red peppers.

Serve this wine just below room temperature, ideally between 15-17°C, in a large-bowled glass to enhance its aromatics. Decanting for about 30 minutes will soften the tannins and open the bouquet. Enjoy now for its fruit-forward vibrancy or cellar for 3-5 years for added complexity.
