Viniou Reviews

Fanti's Brunello di Montalcino DOC Riserva Vigna Le Macchiarelle 2012 is a superb example of Tuscany's legendary Sangiovese-based reds. Crafted exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso and selected from the Le Macchiarelle vineyard, this Riserva represents not only a careful grape selection but also the mastery of extended aging required by the DOCG rules—at least five years before release, with considerable time in oak and bottle. The 2012 vintage was marked by a warm, dry growing season with a well-timed rain in August, resulting in concentrated, expressive fruit and balanced acidity. In the glass, this wine reveals a deep garnet hue, with aromas of ripe cherry, dried rose, balsamic notes, tobacco, and hints of leather and spice, all underpinned by an impressive tannic structure and a lingering, elegant finish.

The Brunello di Montalcino appellation lies in southern Tuscany, centered around the hilltop town of Montalcino. The region is renowned for its diverse microclimates and distinctive galestro and clay soils, which impart depth and minerality to the wines. Elevated vineyards allow for optimal diurnal temperature swings, preserving the grape's natural acidity and aromatic freshness. Montalcino’s winemaking heritage dates back centuries, with Brunello di Montalcino earning DOCG status in 1980 and solidifying its reputation as one of Italy’s quintessential fine wines.

A wine of such depth and structure is a natural partner for robust cuisine. Classic Tuscan dishes like bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine T-bone steak), wild boar ragù, or pappardelle al cinghiale are perfect matches, as the wine’s tannins and acidity complement rich meats and savory sauces. Traditional aged Pecorino cheese, roasted game, or earthy porcini mushroom risotto also highlight Brunello’s complexity.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this wine for at least one hour to allow its bouquet to open fully. Serve at 16-18°C in large, tulip-shaped glasses. Properly stored, the 2012 Fanti Riserva retains aging potential and can evolve beautifully over the next decade.
