Viniou Reviews

Domaine Potinet-Ampeau’s Volnay 2019 is a splendid ambassador of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, renowned for its elegance and finesse. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, this wine showcases the delicate yet expressive character that Volnay is known for. The 2019 vintage benefited from a warm, very sunny growing season, contributing to ripe fruit aromas and optimal tannin maturity while retaining the integral freshness typical of Burgundy reds. Vinification at Domaine Potinet-Ampeau captures the purity of the grape, with gentle extraction and careful ageing to enhance the natural refinement of the terroir. The result is a wine of radiant ruby colour, refined aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle floral notes, supported by a silky palate and fine-boned structure.

Volnay lies in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, an area celebrated for producing some of the most graceful Pinot Noir wines in Burgundy. The vineyards are planted on well-draining limestone and marl soils, which contribute to the wine’s aromatic delicacy and minerality. Thanks to a semi-continental climate, the region experiences warm summers and cool autumns, allowing for long, slow ripening—ideal for Pinot Noir’s nuanced development. Volnay’s rich winemaking history dates back to the Middle Ages, and the appellation continues to captivate Burgundy lovers with its graceful and age-worthy cuvées.

For food pairings, Volnay’s subtle palette and polished tannins make it an excellent companion to a wide range of dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry such as guinea fowl or duck breast, as well as veal in a light jus. Mushroom-based dishes risotto, and traditional Burgundian recipes like coq au vin complement its earthiness. Soft cheeses, such as Brie de Meaux or Chaource, also highlight the wine’s charm without overwhelming its finesse.

To appreciate all its aromatic complexity, serve this Volnay at 15-17°C. Decanting for thirty minutes before serving will help reveal its delicate bouquet and allow the texture to unfold gracefully. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will reward patience over the next five to eight years.
