Castelão is a red grape variety native to Portugal, widely appreciated for its ability to thrive in hot, dry climates and sandy soils. Wines made from Castelão exhibit a distinct aromatic profile, typically featuring notes of red berries such as strawberry and raspberry, alongside herbal nuances, subtle floral hints, and occasionally a touch of spice or earthiness. On the palate, Castelão wines offer medium to full body, moderate to firm tannins, and refreshing acidity, often accompanied by flavors of cherry, pomegranate, and plum, with a lingering, slightly rustic finish.
The grape is primarily cultivated in the Setúbal Peninsula, particularly in the Palmela region, as well as throughout Lisbon, Alentejo, and the Tejo (Tagus) regions. Castelão is vinified both as a single varietal and in blends, yielding diverse styles from youthful, fruit-driven reds to more complex, barrel-aged expressions with capacity for bottle aging.
Recommended food pairings include grilled or roasted meats—such as pork, lamb, and beef—as well as hearty stews, game dishes, and aged cheeses. Castelão's vibrant fruit and structure also complement Mediterranean cuisine, including herb-infused vegetables and tomato-based sauces, making it a versatile partner at the table.
