The 2020 Pintia from Bodega Vega Sicilia is an expressive red wine that encapsulates the unique character of the Toro DO in Castille and León, Spain. Crafted exclusively from Tinta de Toro, a local variant of Tempranillo, this vintage combines power and elegance. The grapes are sourced from old vines rooted in the region’s alluvial soils laced with pebbles and clay, lending the wine its distinct depth and minerality. Vinification at Pintia involves meticulous sorting, fermentation at controlled temperatures, and ageing for around 12-15 months in a blend of French and American oak barrels, which imparts subtle notes of spice and toast while allowing the intense fruit character to shine.
The Toro DO region in Castille and León is renowned for its robust reds. The continental climate here is marked by hot, dry summers and harsh winters, with significant temperature swings between day and night. This creates ideal ripening conditions, yielding concentration and complexity in the wines. The sandy and stony soils of the region enhance drainage and force the vines to root deeply, resulting in reduced yields but heightened flavour intensity. Toro’s viticultural history dates back to Roman times and the region’s wines have been celebrated for centuries, lauded for their ageing potential and bold profiles.
For food pairings, Pintia’s power and structure call for equally robust dishes. It works beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as lamb shoulder with rosemary or a classic Spanish chuletón (T-bone steak). The wine’s depth stands up well to dishes featuring game, like venison stew, or traditional regional fare such as morcilla (blood sausage). Hard cheeses like Manchego, or aged Zamorano, also make excellent companions, harmonising with the wine’s rich fruit and spice.
To appreciate all the nuances of this Toro, serve at 16-18°C after decanting for at least an hour. This promotes aeration, unveiling layers of ripe black fruit, liquorice, tobacco, and floral undertones. The 2020 Pintia will reward patience and contemplation, whether enjoyed now or after a few more years in your cellar.
