Viniou Reviews

Bodegas y Viñedos PSI 2011 is a remarkable red wine crafted by the revered Dominio de Pingus estate, renowned for their meticulous approach and profound expression of the Ribera del Duero terroir. The cuvée PSI, primarily composed of the indigenous Tempranillo grape (known locally as Tinto Fino), occasionally blended with a small amount of Garnacha, showcases the exceptional character of old vines—many exceeding 40 years in age. The 2011 vintage benefits from a warm and balanced growing season, yielding grapes of optimal ripeness and concentration. Careful, traditional vinification in open-top vats, and restrained use of oak barrels allow the purity of fruit and the nuances of the terroir to shine through. The result is a deep, ruby-hued wine exuding aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plums, violets, and subtle hints of spice and balsam.

Ribera del Duero, situated along the Duero River in northern Spain, is renowned for its continental climate: hot summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variation. The distinctive elevation—many vineyards lie at 750-900 metres—allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining an impressive freshness. Soils here are a mosaic of limestone, clay, and sand, imparting both structure and minerality to the wines. The region's vinicultural history is deeply rooted, with monastic orders cultivating vines as early as the twelfth century, and today it stands as one of Spain’s pre-eminent red wine appellations.

The elegant yet powerful style of PSI 2011 makes it a superb companion to hearty dishes. Traditional Castilian roast lamb (lechazo asado), grilled chorizo, wild mushroom risotto, or slow-cooked beef cheeks would highlight the wine’s depth and supple tannins. It also complements Spanish classics such as jamón ibérico and Manchego cheese for a refined tasting experience.

For optimal enjoyment, decant PSI 2011 for at least an hour prior to serving to allow its complex bouquet to unfurl. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C to best appreciate its balance, finesse, and layered character. This wine promises further development with careful cellaring but is already drinking beautifully after over a decade of ageing.
