Viniou Reviews

Manoella 2020 Rouge from the Douro region of Portugal is a fine example of the contemporary evolution of Portuguese table wines. Crafted from a blend of indigenous grape varieties typical to the Douro Valley—such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca—this vintage showcases the complexity and character that old terroirs and careful winemaking can offer. The 2020 season was marked by a warm, dry summer, contributing to concentrated fruit and firm, ripe tannins. Traditional vinification techniques are generally observed at Manoella, often involving manual harvesting and fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the fruit profile, with ageing in used French oak barrels to add nuance without overshadowing the natural freshness.

The Douro Valley, one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world and originally famed for its port wines, has recently gained widespread acclaim for its dry reds. Steep terraced vineyards line the slopes of the Douro River, rooted in poor, schistous soils that force vines deep in search of water, ultimately leading to lower yields and intense, flavourful grapes. The climate is predominantly hot and dry, though some cooler conditions can be found at higher altitudes, providing the necessary balance for acidity and freshness. The region’s viticultural heritage dates back centuries, blending tradition with a dynamic new wave of winemakers devoted to extracting the full expression of its unique land.

For food pairings, Manoella 2020’s structure and aromatic intensity make it an excellent companion for robust, savoury dishes. Local Douro cuisine such as posta mirandesa (grilled beef steak), roasted goat with herbs, or feijoada (bean stew with pork) would be particularly harmonious. The wine’s dark fruit profile and mineral underpinnings also match beautifully with grilled lamb, aged cheeses, or mushroom risotto for a vegetarian option.

To fully appreciate Manoella 2020, serve it slightly below room temperature, between 16-18°C. Decanting for at least 30 minutes before serving will help the wine open up, revealing its layered aromas and supple tannins. Enjoy within the next 5-8 years to capture its most vibrant expression.
