Viniou Reviews

Virna Barolo 2010 is a lovely expression of one of Italy’s most esteemed regions. Made exclusively with Nebbiolo grapes, this wine is the result of meticulous selection and traditional vinification. The 2010 vintage is particularly celebrated in Barolo, benefiting from favorable weather conditions that enabled gradual, even ripening. After harvesting, the grapes are typically destemmed, then fermented in stainless steel, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This process allows the Nebbiolo to develop its complex bouquet and structured palate, providing the hallmarks of Barolo—refined tannins, bright acidity, and notes of tar, roses, red cherries, dried herbs, tobacco, and earthy undertones.

Barolo comes from the heart of Piedmont in northwest Italy, at the foothills of the Alps. The combination of a continental climate—meaning cold winters and hot summers—and the rolling hills with a rich mix of clay, limestone, and marl soils, define the singular profile of Barolo wines. Vineyards are often positioned on south-facing slopes to maximize sunlight, which helps Nebbiolo achieve full phenolic ripeness. The history of wine in Barolo is centuries old, and it has earned the nickname, "the king of wines and the wine of kings." Its aging potential and depth have long made it a wine for both collectors and gourmets.

Pairing a Virna Barolo 2010 can make for a memorable meal. Traditional Piedmontese cuisine is a natural match; think of tajarin pasta with white truffle if you want a regional specialty, or classic braised beef—brasato al Barolo—where the wine both flavors and accompanies the dish. This Barolo also works beautifully with aged cheeses, wild mushroom risottos, or game meats like venison and duck, where its lifted acidity and structure cut through richness and bring out umami flavors.

For the best experience, decant the wine for at least one hour to allow the bouquet and flavors to unfold. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C, to showcase its range and elegance. The 2010 vintage is just entering a fantastic drinking window, but you can continue to cellar it for added complexity over the next decade.
