Viniou Reviews

Monchiero’s Barolo DOC Cuvée del Comune di La Morra 2021 is a striking representative of the Nebbiolo grape, offering an elegant and complex expression typical of this noble variety. Sourced from organically cultivated vineyards in La Morra, a commune renowned for its softer, more perfumed Barolo style, this vintage benefits from the region’s unique blue marl soils and gentle rolling hills. 2021 was a year marked by a balanced growing season, yielding wines with both freshness and structure. Traditional vinification, likely involving extended maceration and aging in large oak casks, allows the Nebbiolo’s delicate aromas of rose petal, sour cherry, tar, and subtle spice to shine, while maintaining the firm tannic backbone characteristic of Barolo.

The Barolo zone in Piemonte enjoys a continental climate with warm days and cool nights, especially in elevated sites like La Morra. These diurnal shifts help preserve the grape’s essential acidity and aromatics, while the calcareous-clay soils impart a refined texture and pronounced minerality. Piemonte, steeped in a history of winemaking excellence, has made Barolo its flagship red, celebrated across the globe as “the wine of kings, and the king of wines.” The commune of La Morra is especially esteemed for giving Barolo a velvety mouthfeel and sweet floral aromas.

Pairing this Monchiero Barolo is a true pleasure. Traditional Piedmontese dishes showcase its virtues: try it with braised beef cheek in Barolo sauce, risotto with porcini mushrooms, tajarin with white truffles, or aged cheeses like Castelmagno. Outside regional classics, this wine also stands up beautifully to roasted lamb, game, and hearty root vegetable preparations. Its firm but refined tannins and vibrant acidity make it a perfect match for dishes with rich textures and earthy flavors.

For optimal enjoyment, decant at least an hour prior to tasting to allow the bouquet to blossom. Serve at 17–18°C, in large tulip-shaped glasses, so the nuances of this young, yet already expressive, Barolo can unfold gracefully. With a few years of cellaring, it will gain even more complexity and tertiary notes.
