Viniou Reviews

Geografico Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is an outstanding expression from one of Tuscany’s most celebrated appellations. This wine is sourced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, known locally as Sangiovese Grosso or "Brunello." The 2019 vintage benefited from favorable climatic conditions, allowing optimal ripening and excellent balance. The grapes are hand-harvested from hillside vineyards surrounding Montalcino, where altitudes and exposure to breezes promote healthy maturation and complexity. Traditional vinification methods include an extended maceration and aging for at least two years in large oak casks, followed by an additional period in the bottle, which enhances structure, depth, and aromatic finesse. In your glass, expect an intense ruby red color, aromas of ripe cherry, wild berries, floral undertones, spice, and earthy hints, all underpinned by refined tannins and vibrant acidity—a signature of this DOC.

Montalcino lies at the southern edge of the Tuscany region, where the Mediterranean climate is tempered by elevation and cool nighttime inversions. The soils here are composed of rocky galestro and clay-limestone, providing optimal drainage and contributing mineral notes and elegance to the Sangiovese grapes. This unique terroir, combined with centuries-old winemaking tradition, has helped Brunello earn its place as one of Italy’s grandest reds, with a reputation for both power and finesse.

For food pairings, Brunello di Montalcino pairs beautifully with Tuscan classics such as wild boar ragù, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or oven-roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic. It also complements aged pecorino cheese, mushroom risotto, and hearty stews. These dishes emphasize the wine’s depth and match its firm but polished tannic structure.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for an hour before serving to allow its nuances to unfold. Serve at 16-18°C to highlight the complexity while maintaining freshness. This Brunello is excellent now with food, but will reward cellaring over the next decade for added harmony and tertiary aromas.
