Viniou Reviews

Campo Piano's Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Riserva 2021 is a striking example of the depth and complexity for which this celebrated appellation is known. Crafted predominantly from indigenous grape varieties such as Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone, the wine reflects the traditional Amarone method: after harvest, the bunches are air-dried (appassimento) for several months to concentrate sugars and flavours before gentle pressing and fermentation. The extended ageing period, especially for a Riserva, imparts additional layers of nuance, resulting in a densely textured, full-bodied red, abundant in aromas of dried black cherry, plum compote, figs, cocoa, and subtle tobacco notes.

The Valpolicella region in Veneto benefits from a mild, temperate climate influenced by the proximity of Lake Garda and the sheltering Lessini Mountains. The hilly terrain, rich in limestone, clay, and basalt, confers excellent drainage and mineral complexity to the wines. Amarone has been produced here for centuries, evolving from the region's historical production of Recioto, a sweet wine, to the drier, more robust style that Amarone represents today. The region’s long winemaking heritage, combined with its unique microclimate, enables the production of wines of great intensity, yet with remarkable balance and elegance.

Pairing this Amarone calls for dishes that can stand up to its power and richness. Traditional Venetian fare, such as braised beef cheeks (guancette al Amarone) or risotto all’Amarone, highlight local harmony. It is also outstanding with aged cheeses like Monte Veronese, game dishes, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or even hearty mushroom-based recipes. For an indulgent pairing, try it with dark chocolate desserts—the dried fruit and cocoa nuances play beautifully together.

To truly appreciate its complexity, serve this wine at 17-18°C. Decanting for at least an hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open up. Enjoy over an evening, savouring the evolving aromas and structure as it breathes. Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva is also well-suited to cellar ageing, should you choose to let it develop further.
