Viniou Reviews

Domaine des Comtes Lafon’s Meursault “Cuvée Désirées” 2002 is a striking example of Burgundy’s white wine mastery. Crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, this cuvée draws from mature vines rooted in the Désirées parcel, known for producing wines of exceptional depth and precision. The 2002 vintage benefits from a balanced growing season that provided grapes with perfect ripeness and natural acidity. Traditional vinification methods were employed, with fermentation and ageing taking place in French oak barrels, imparting a gentle toastiness without overwhelming the natural fruit profile. Over time, this wine has developed remarkable complexity, blending notes of ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, roasted hazelnut, and smoky minerality with hints of butter and vanilla from maturation.

Meursault is situated in the heart of the Côte de Beaune and enjoys a rich winemaking tradition. The region’s gentle slopes are composed of limestone and marl, providing excellent drainage and imparting a distinctive mineral tension to the wines. The local climate is semi-continental, characterised by marked seasonal contrasts that encourage a long, gradual ripening period. This translates into wines of extraordinary balance, embodying both richness and elegance. Meursault is historically known for its white wines, which are some of the most sought-after examples of Burgundy’s remarkable terroir-driven Chardonnays.

For food pairings, Meursault “Cuvée Désirées” is a thrilling companion to classic Burgundian dishes such as escargots de Bourgogne, creamy poultry fricassée, or Bresse chicken with morels. Its generous texture and vivid acidity also match beautifully with lobster, scallops, or sole meunière, as well as aged Comté cheese. The wine’s richness allows it to hold its own with dishes featuring cream sauces or toasted nuts.

To enjoy this wine at its best, serve it between 12-14°C. Allow the bottle to breathe for thirty minutes before serving, and use large Burgundy glasses to fully appreciate its evolving aromas and layers of flavour. This mature Meursault will reward careful decanting and thoughtful food pairing, making for an unforgettable tasting experience.
