Château Élisée 2018 originates from the prestigious Pomerol appellation within Bordeaux’s right bank, more specifically the Le Libournais subregion. This red wine is predominantly crafted from Merlot, which thrives in Pomerol’s unique terroir, often blended with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and, occasionally, Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2018 vintage benefited from an excellent growing season: a wet spring was followed by a warm, dry summer, yielding fruit with impressive ripeness and concentration. In the cellar, careful vinification and ageing—often in French oak barrels—bring depth, finesse, and silky tannins to the final wine. The result is a voluptuous and generous Pomerol, expressing notes of ripe plum, black cherry, truffle, subtle spices, and a refined earthy minerality.
Pomerol, although one of the smallest yet most celebrated Bordeaux appellations, enjoys a rich history, with its modern fame built chiefly on the remarkable quality of its Merlot wines. The region’s climate is temperate, marked by mild winters and warm summers, promoting even and optimal grape ripening. The iconic blue clay (‘crasse de fer’) and gravelly soils are fundamental to Pomerol’s charm, endowing the wines with power, velvety texture, and immense ageing potential. Though Pomerol lacks an official classification, its estates consistently rank among Bordeaux’s most sought-after producers, prized for their complexity and approachability.
To complement the opulent character of Château Élisée 2018, pair it with classic dishes such as roast duck breast, lamb shoulder confit, or tournedos Rossini. Its supple tannins and depth make it an outstanding match for earthy mushroom risotto, truffle-infused dishes, or a traditional Périgord cassoulet. Mature cheeses such as aged Comté or Saint-Nectaire also suit its savoury profile.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decant it for at least an hour before tasting to allow its aromas and structure to fully unfold. Château Élisée 2018 has the potential to age beautifully, but its elegance and balance also suit early enjoyment after appropriate aeration.
