Domaine Rostaing’s Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde 2021 is an outstanding red wine from one of the Rhône Valley’s most prestigious appellations. Made predominantly from Syrah, with a small proportion of Viognier co-fermented (as is traditional for this cru), this cuvée showcases the finesse and aromatic complexity typical of the Côte Blonde sector within Côte-Rôtie. The 2021 vintage was marked by challenging weather—cool conditions and limited yields—but, in the hands of a skilled producer like Rostaing, this has resulted in a wine of remarkable freshness, precise structure and elegant fruit. Expect expressive aromas of violets, wild berries, cracked black pepper, and subtle smoky notes, with a silken texture and finely integrated tannins, the result of gentle vinification and careful maturation, often in used French oak barrels.
Côte-Rôtie lies in the northernmost part of the Rhône Valley, where steep, sun-drenched slopes are carved into ancient schist and mica soils. The Côte Blonde, one of the two emblematic sectors, is characterised by paler, richer soils, imparting extra suppleness and aromatic lift to the wines. The region enjoys a continental climate, heavily influenced by the mistral wind, ensuring excellent ripeness and disease resistance. Côte-Rôtie’s winemaking history stretches back to Roman times, and today the appellation is highly acclaimed for its distinctive, ageworthy and perfumed expressions of Syrah.
To complement the wine’s balance of power and elegance, pair it with classic dishes such as roast duck breast with a red wine reduction, grilled lamb cutlets, or venison with wild mushrooms. Regional recipes such as daube de boeuf à la Provençale also make an excellent match. For vegetarians, dishes like aubergine gratin or braised lentils with root vegetables work beautifully, especially when seasoned with fresh herbs.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this Côte-Rôtie at 16-18°C, ideally after a gentle decanting to allow the wine’s aromatics to unfold. This wine has excellent ageing potential, but its freshness and approachability mean it can be appreciated now or cellared for further development.
