Viniou Reviews

Tyrrell’s Vat 9 Shiraz 2021 is a beautiful expression of Hunter Valley Shiraz, showcasing both the finesse and restrained power typical of this renowned Australian region. This cuvée, drawn from some of Tyrrell’s oldest and best vineyard sites, is crafted entirely from the Shiraz varietal, harvested in a vintage marked by excellent ripening conditions and balanced yields. The wine typically undergoes gentle fermentation and maturation in a combination of large-format French oak barrels and older casks, which help preserve the grape’s natural fruit intensity while imparting subtle complexity. Expect a vibrant bouquet marked by ripe blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry, with delicate floral notes, white pepper spice, and an inviting undertone of earthy minerality. On the palate, the 2021 Vat 9 is silky and medium-bodied, with fine tannins supporting flavours of juicy dark fruit, black olive and a suggestion of smoked meat. A vibrant natural acidity underpins the wine, pointing to its excellent ageing potential.

Hunter Valley, the oldest wine region in Australia, is blessed with a warm, humid climate moderated by cooling coastal breezes and occasional afternoon thunderstorms. The soils here are predominantly acidic, with deep alluvial sandy loams and well-drained red loams, which create ideal conditions for crafting Shiraz of remarkable elegance, savoury depth, and fresh acidity. The history of Hunter Valley Shiraz stretches back to the mid-19th century, and Tyrrell’s themselves, founded in 1858, are among the region’s true pioneers. Over the decades, their Vat 9 has become an emblematic wine, embodying both regional tradition and adaptability to modern winemaking techniques.

This Shiraz pairs wonderfully with robust dishes that echo its savoury, peppery character—think roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, slow-cooked beef cheeks, or a classic hunter-style chicken casserole. For a local touch, consider serving it with chargrilled kangaroo or a hearty mushroom pie, both of which harmonise beautifully with the wine’s earthy undertones.

Serve this wine at around 16–18°C. Decanting for an hour before pouring will allow the aromatics to unfurl and soften the tannins, particularly in its youth. The Vat 9 Shiraz will reward cellaring for up to 10–15 years, evolving further complexity and seamless integration as it matures.
