Red Grape Variety

Cerasuolo di Vittoria is Sicily’s only DOCG wine, crafted primarily from a blend of Nero d’Avola (50-70%) and Frappato (30-50%). This wine boasts a vibrant ruby-red color with brilliant cherry highlights. On the nose, it reveals an expressive bouquet of red berries—cranberry, pomegranate, and sour cherry—layered with floral notes of violet and hints of Mediterranean herbs and sweet spices. The palate is supple and medium-bodied, marked by a lively acidity, soft yet grippy tannins, and a persistent, refreshing finish. The intricacy of flavors balances savory earthiness with a typical fruit-driven freshness, underscored by subtle notes of licorice and mineral.

The main production area is the southeastern corner of Sicily, around Vittoria in the provinces of Ragusa, Caltanissetta, and Catania. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is usually produced in two styles: the classic, ready-to-drink version, and Riserva, which sees longer aging for greater complexity.

Ideal food pairings include grilled swordfish, roasted poultry, Sicilian eggplant parmigiana, and cured meats. The wine’s bright acidity and refined tannic structure also complement tomato-based pasta dishes and semi-mature cheeses, highlighting the versatility and food-friendliness of this Sicilian gem.
