Red Grape Variety

Plavec is a lesser-known yet promising Central European grape variety, predominantly cultivated in the vineyards of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and parts of Austria. The grape produces wines that are typically light-bodied with a pale straw hue. On the nose, Plavec wines offer a fresh and delicate aromatic profile, displaying notes of green apple, citrus zest, white flowers, and sometimes a subtle herbal undertone. On the palate, they tend to be crisp and lively, featuring bright acidity and flavors of lemon, pear, and a hint of minerality, making them particularly refreshing.

Viticulturally, Plavec thrives in cooler climates and is mainly found in the Moravia region of the Czech Republic and southern Slovakia, where it benefits from well-drained soils and moderate sunshine. The style of Plavec-based wines is most often dry and unoaked, highlighting the grape’s natural freshness and purity. Occasionally, it is used in blends, lending acidity and aromatic lift.

Plavec wines are exceptionally food-friendly thanks to their vibrant acidity and subtle fruit character. They pair well with light salads, freshwater fish, mild goat cheeses, and vegetable dishes such as asparagus or artichoke risotto, making them an excellent choice for contemporary cuisine and warm-weather dining.
