Italian Riesling, also known as Welschriesling, is a distinct white grape variety widely cultivated across Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in regions such as Northern Italy (especially Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige), Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia. Despite the name, it is unrelated to the classic German Riesling.
This varietal exhibits a vibrant aromatic profile with floral nuances and fresh notes of green apple, pear, citrus, and occasionally delicate herbal undertones. On the palate, Italian Riesling offers crisp acidity and a light to medium body, leading to a refreshing, clean finish. In warmer sites, subtle stone fruit and honeyed characters may emerge.
Italian Riesling is highly versatile, producing wines in a range of styles—from youthful, dry whites showcasing purity and minerality, to late-harvest or botrytized dessert wines that display richer textures and pronounced sweetness while retaining signature freshness.
Its lively acidity and moderate alcohol make Italian Riesling an excellent companion for a variety of dishes. Recommended pairings include light seafood, shellfish, salads, soft cheeses, poultry, and Asian cuisine with citrus or ginger elements, allowing the wine's freshness and subtle fruitiness to shine alongside these foods.
