Côt, internationally recognized as Malbec, is a red grape varietal renowned for producing deeply colored, robust wines with a distinct aromatic character. On the nose, Côt typically offers intense aromas of ripe blackberries, plum, and black cherry, often complemented by subtle notes of violet, spice, and earth. The palate is marked by rich, concentrated fruit flavors, medium to high tannins, and a refreshing acidity, resulting in wines that are both powerful and approachable.
While famously associated with the Cahors region in Southwest France—where it often yields structured, age-worthy reds—Côt is also extensively cultivated in Argentina, particularly in Mendoza, where it produces plush, fruit-forward wines with softer tannins. Other notable regions include the Loire Valley and several parts of the New World.
Côt wines are versatile, ranging from youthful and vibrant styles to more complex, barrel-aged examples with notes of cocoa and tobacco. They pair exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as grilled meats, roasted lamb, game, and mature cheeses. The richness and structure of Côt complement savory, umami-driven flavors, making it a preferred choice for robust, flavorful cuisines.
