Khndoghni, also known as Sireni, is a distinctive red grape variety native to Armenia, particularly prized in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and Vayots Dzor regions. This grape produces wines noted for their deep ruby color and complex aromatic profile. On the nose, Khndoghni wines often deliver layers of ripe blackberries, cherries, plums, and hints of wild herbs, complemented by subtle spice and earthy undertones. On the palate, they exhibit a medium to full body with well-structured tannins, balanced acidity, and flavors that echo the nose, revealing dark fruit, a touch of pepper, and mineral nuances that reflect the volcanic soils.
Winemakers craft Khndoghni in a range of styles, most commonly as robust, age-worthy reds, but also as softer, fruit-driven wines intended for earlier consumption. Some producers experiment with oak aging, enhancing complexity and adding notes of vanilla and toast.
Khndoghni wines pair beautifully with hearty dishes, such as grilled lamb, roasted pork, beef stews, and skewered meats. Their structure and spice also complement aged cheeses and rich mushroom dishes, making them a versatile choice for diverse culinary experiences.
