Kakhet is a white grape variety primarily cultivated in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia, from which it takes its name. Renowned for producing both still and traditional qvevri (amphora-aged) wines, Kakhet wines exhibit a complex and compelling aromatic profile. Expect expressive notes of ripe orchard fruits such as apple and pear, complemented by subtle citrus, honey, and wild herb nuances. When vinified in qvevri, the variety develops additional layers of dried fruit, spices, and a distinct earthy character.
The main viticultural region for Kakhet is Kakheti, with smaller plantings sometimes found throughout other parts of Georgia. The style of wines varies from fresh and crisp, unoaked whites with vibrant acidity, to full-bodied, amber-hued wines with robust tannic structure developed through extended skin contact and traditional winemaking techniques.
Kakhet wines pair particularly well with a wide array of dishes. Their bold structure and aromatic complexity shine alongside roasted poultry, grilled fish, earthy mushroom dishes, and mature cheeses. The skin-contact, qvevri-aged versions make excellent companions to lamb stews or richly spiced Georgian cuisine, where their savory depth complements intricate flavors.
