Lafnetscha is a rare and distinctive white grape variety predominantly grown in the Valais region of Switzerland. This ancient, indigenous varietal offers a fascinating aromatic profile layered with notes of green apple, citrus zest, white flowers, and subtle mineral nuances, often accompanied by herbal undertones. On the palate, Lafnetscha wines are typically fresh and lively, balancing crisp acidity with a medium body, featuring flavors of ripe pear, stone fruit, and occasionally an intriguing saline edge.
The principal vineyards are found around Visp and Upper Valais, where the unique alpine terroir and long sunny days allow the grape to reach optimal ripeness while retaining vibrant acidity. Lafnetscha is most commonly vinified as a dry still wine, which tends to exhibit pronounced minerality and a clean, expressive finish; however, small quantities may be produced in off-dry or slightly aged styles, adding further complexity and textural depth.
For food pairing, Lafnetscha's freshness and structure make it an excellent match with Swiss Alpine cuisine. It pairs particularly well with raclette, fondue, freshwater fish, and goat cheese, but also complements light poultry dishes, asparagus, and mild Asian-inspired fare, enhancing both the wine and the meal.
