Johannisberg, internationally recognized as Riesling, is regarded as one of the most noble and expressive white grape varieties. Known for its vibrant acidity and remarkable aging potential, Johannisberg offers an aromatic profile characterized by aromas of green apple, citrus blossom, white peach, apricot, and characteristic mineral undertones. Nuances of petrol and honey may emerge with age, adding complexity and depth.
Mainly cultivated in Germany—particularly the Rheingau, Mosel, and Pfalz regions—Johannisberg also thrives in Alsace (France), Austria, Australia’s Clare and Eden Valleys, and select cool-climate regions in the United States, such as Washington and Finger Lakes, New York.
Johannisberg produces a range of wine styles, from bone-dry (Trocken) to lusciously sweet late-harvest and botrytized selections (Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese). The wines are typically light to medium-bodied, with an elegant, crisp mouthfeel and mineral-driven finish.
Recommended pairings include seafood, shellfish, sushi, pork, spicy Asian dishes, and soft cheeses. Sweeter styles beautifully complement fruit-based desserts or blue cheese. The versatility and food-friendliness of Johannisberg make it a standout choice for both classic and contemporary cuisine.
