Muscat of Alexandria is a distinguished white grape variety celebrated for its intense aromatic profile and versatility. Noted for its pronounced floral and fruity bouquet, the wine exudes scents of orange blossom, rose petals, and ripe tropical fruits such as lychee, peach, and mango, often accompanied by a subtle hint of grape musk. On the palate, Muscat of Alexandria delivers a lively balance of sweetness and refreshing acidity, offering a lush and mouth-coating texture.
This grape thrives in Mediterranean climates, with prominent cultivation in regions such as southern Spain (notably in Málaga and Alicante), Sicily in Italy, parts of southern France, as well as in South Africa, Australia, and California’s Central Valley.
Muscat of Alexandria is used to craft a broad array of wine styles, ranging from dry and off-dry still wines to luscious dessert wines and vibrant, gently sparkling (frizzante) varieties. It is also an important base for several celebrated fortified wines.
Recommended food pairings include fresh fruit salads, blue-veined cheeses, spicy Asian dishes, and classic Mediterranean fare. The variety’s natural sweetness and aromatic intensity make it an excellent companion for fruit-forward desserts and soft goat cheese as well.
