Red Grape Variety

Carinyena, known internationally as Carignan, is a red grape variety recognized for its deep color, robust structure, and vibrant acidity. On the nose, Carinyena-driven wines present an aromatic profile ranging from ripe blackberries, plum, and black cherry to intriguing notes of Mediterranean herbs, pepper, and sometimes leather or smoked meat. The palate is marked by firm tannins and a refreshing, food-friendly acidity, often accompanied by flavors of dark fruit, licorice, and mineral undertones.

Carinyena is predominantly cultivated in northeastern Spain, especially in Catalonia’s Priorat, Montsant, and Empordà regions, as well as in southern France’s Languedoc-Roussillon. The grape thrives in warm, dry climates and poor, stony soils, producing wines with remarkable intensity and aging potential.

Typical wine styles include concentrated, structured reds, both as single varietals and in blends with Garnacha (Grenache) or Syrah. Barrel aging is common, adding complexity and subtle oak influences.

Carinyena’s bold character pairs excellently with grilled meats, rich stews, game, hearty sausages, and aged cheeses. Its acidity and depth make it an outstanding companion for Mediterranean cuisine and robust, slow-cooked dishes.
