Carignan Noir is a traditional Mediterranean grape variety known for its vigor and distinctive character. In the glass, Carignan offers a deep, intensely colored wine with vibrant flavors of black cherry, plum, and wild berry, accompanied by herbal undertones, black pepper, and earthy spice. The palate is typically medium to full-bodied, featuring fresh acidity, firm tannins, and a rustic edge that evolves with age to reveal hints of leather, dried herbs, and licorice.
While originally from Spain (Cariñena), Carignan Noir is most notably associated with France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region, where it thrives in the sun-soaked, low-yield vineyards. It is also cultivated in Sardinia (as Carignano), parts of California, and Chile, each adding unique regional nuances.
Carignan finds its purest expression in old-vine, low-intervention reds, but is often used in robust blends to add color, acidity, and structure. Its versatility also extends to rosés and fresh, fruit-forward varietal bottlings.
Pair Carignan-based wines with Mediterranean fare—grilled lamb, herbed chicken, ratatouille, aged cheeses, or hearty stews—as its bold flavor and lively acidity harmonize beautifully, making it a gastronomic companion for richly flavored dishes.
