Mataro, also known as Mourvèdre in France and Monastrell in Spain, is a red grape variety renowned for producing wines with depth, complexity, and robust character. Its aromatic profile often reveals dark fruit notes such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry, complemented by earthy undertones, hints of black pepper, leather, and wild herbs. On the palate, Mataro is full-bodied, with firm tannins, notable acidity, and a lingering, slightly savory finish.
The grape thrives in warm, sun-drenched regions. It is a signature variety in the Southern Rhône Valley (notably in Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends), Provence’s Bandol, Spain’s Jumilla and Yecla, as well as in South Australia and California.
Mataro is used for both varietal wines and blends. Varietal wines showcase its richness and structure, while in blends, Mataro contributes color, tannin, and spicy complexity, often combined with Grenache and Syrah (as in GSM blends).
Ideal food pairings include slow-cooked lamb, grilled meats, hearty stews, and strong cheeses. Its earthy, spicy notes complement Mediterranean dishes and barbecued fare, making it a versatile choice for robust cuisine.
