Côt, more widely known as Malbec, is a red grape variety highly esteemed for its deeply colored, robust wines. Its aromatic profile often reveals vibrant notes of ripe black plum, blackberry, and black cherry, complemented by hints of violets, cocoa, tobacco, and subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, Malbec wines typically offer a plush, velvety texture with moderate to high tannins and balanced acidity, leading to a rich and persistent finish.
Originating in Southwest France, particularly the Cahors appellation where it is known as Côt, Malbec found its international acclaim in Argentina, especially in the Mendoza region. It is also cultivated in California, Chile, and select regions in Australia.
The wine styles range from rustic and robust, as seen in French Malbecs, to fruit-forward, opulent expressions found in Argentine versions. Malbec is most often vinified as a varietal wine, though it also serves well in blends.
Malbec’s bold structure and intense flavors pair exceptionally with grilled and roasted meats—especially beef—lamb, game, and strong cheeses. Its smoky, spicy notes also make it an outstanding match for barbecue dishes and rich, savory stews.
