Ermitage, known in some regions as Marsanne, is a distinguished white grape variety celebrated for its complexity and depth. Predominantly grown in France’s northern Rhône Valley—particularly in the Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph appellations—Ermitage has also found success in select New World vineyards, such as California and Australia.
On the nose, Ermitage reveals a refined aromatic profile, often exhibiting notes of ripe pear, honeydew melon, apricot, and citrus zest. Delicate floral hints of acacia and honeysuckle are complemented by nuances of almond, beeswax, and subtle minerality. On the palate, this varietal typically offers a full-bodied, rich texture balanced by vibrant acidity and a lingering, elegant finish.
Ermitage shines in both youthful, fruit-forward expressions and more age-worthy styles that develop layers of nuttiness, honey, and brioche with time. It is commonly vinified as a single varietal but may also appear in blends, contributing complexity and structure.
Pair Ermitage-based wines with seafood dishes like seared scallops or lobster, roast chicken in cream sauces, grilled veal, or earthy vegetarian fare such as risotto with wild mushrooms to elevate both the wine and the meal.
