Roter Veltliner is a distinctive and historic white grape variety, primarily cultivated in Austria, especially in the Wagram region, with smaller plantings in areas such as Wachau and Kamptal. Despite the name, its grapes turn pinkish-red at full maturity, but the wines produced are white. In the glass, Roter Veltliner typically delivers fine aromas of ripe orchard fruits—apple, pear, and quince—along with notes of honey, citrus zest, and subtle herbal and spicy undertones. The palate is marked by medium to full body, lively acidity, and a characteristic creamy texture, often accentuated by an elegant, slightly nutty finish.
Winemakers produce Roter Veltliner in a range of styles, most commonly as dry, unwooded white wines focused on freshness and purity, although richer, late-harvest versions with higher residual sugar are occasionally found. These wines age well, developing additional complexity over time. Roter Veltliner pairs beautifully with diverse cuisine: its richness and acidity make it an excellent companion to roasted poultry, creamy vegetable dishes, white asparagus, and Asian-inspired cuisine, as well as freshwater fish or mild cheeses. This versatile grape offers a unique and rewarding tasting experience for wine enthusiasts.
