Alexandrouli is an indigenous Georgian grape variety primarily grown in the Racha-Lechkhumi region, particularly in the villages of Ambrolauri and Oni in western Georgia. Known for its vibrant red hue, Alexandrouli wines are celebrated for their expressive bouquet, typically offering an aromatic profile of ripe red berries, black cherry, and wild strawberries, complemented by subtle floral and earthy undertones. On the palate, these wines are medium-bodied with balanced acidity and soft tannins, providing a harmonious structure and a lingering, slightly spicy finish.
Typically blended with Mujuretuli to craft the renowned semi-sweet Khvanchkara wine, Alexandrouli is also occasionally vinified on its own in dry or semi-sweet styles. The resulting wines express freshness, finesse, and notable fruit concentration. Alexandrouli pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, such as roasted lamb, grilled pork, duck with fruit sauces, and richly spiced vegetarian stews. Its moderate sweetness and aromatic complexity also make it a compelling companion to aged cheeses and desserts with red fruit components. The unique characteristics of Alexandrouli underscore its valued place in the Georgian winemaking tradition.
