Khikhvi is a rare and distinctive white grape variety indigenous to Georgia, predominantly cultivated in the Kakheti region, especially along the Alazani River. Renowned for its unique aromatic profile, Khikhvi wines express an enticing bouquet of ripe stone fruits such as apricot, peach, and yellow plum, often accompanied by delicate floral notes and hints of honey and herbal undertones. On the palate, Khikhvi delivers a medium to full body, balanced acidity, and a smooth texture, with flavors echoing the nose—ripe fruit, subtle spice, and a characteristic freshness.
Traditionally, Khikhvi is vinified both in classic European style and in traditional Georgian qvevri amphorae, producing both dry and semi-sweet white wines, as well as amber (skin-contact) wines. The latter style highlights deeper complexity, showing nutty, tea-like nuances and gentle tannic structure. Khikhvi wines are best enjoyed young but can age gracefully, developing honeyed and savory dimensions.
Ideal food pairings for Khikhvi include grilled seafood, poultry, and vegetable dishes with aromatic herbs. Its structure and aromatic complexity also complement mild cheeses, Georgian salads, and traditional dishes such as chicken satsivi or pkhali. Khikhvi’s expressive character and versatility make it a standout choice for adventurous wine lovers.
