Rkatsiteli is an ancient white grape variety, originating from Georgia and recognized as one of the oldest wine grapes in the world. Renowned for its vibrant acidity, this grape produces wines with a pronounced aromatic profile featuring notes of green apple, quince, citrus peel, fresh herbs, and often a subtle floral undertone. On the palate, Rkatsiteli wines are typically crisp, medium-bodied, and well-structured, balancing lively acidity with flavors of orchard fruits and hints of almond or mineral nuances.
The primary growing region is Georgia's Kakheti, where it is deeply intertwined with traditional winemaking, including qvevri (clay amphora) fermentation, which imparts additional texture and complexity. Rkatsiteli has also found success in Eastern Europe, notably in Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, and the Finger Lakes region of New York State.
Rkatsiteli is crafted in a range of styles, from refreshing, dry table wines to amber-hued skin-contact (orange) wines, and even dessert styles. It pairs beautifully with a variety of foods, especially dishes featuring seafood, roasted poultry, herbed vegetable dishes, and traditional Georgian cuisine like khachapuri or walnut-based sauces, making it a versatile choice for diverse culinary experiences.
