Tramini, often known as Savagnin or aromatic Traminer, is a distinctive grape variety celebrated for its highly expressive aromatic profile. On the nose, Tramini wines reveal notes of ripe lychee, rose petals, spice, and sometimes a touch of tropical fruit and citrus zest. On the palate, the wines are typically medium-bodied with a balanced acidity, displaying flavors of exotic fruit, stone fruit, and a gentle spiciness that lingers in the finish.
The grape is primarily cultivated in regions with cooler climates, such as the Alto Adige in Italy, Alsace in France (as a progenitor of Gewürztraminer), and parts of Central and Eastern Europe including Slovakia, Slovenia, and Austria. Tramini is also grown in select vineyards in Australia and New Zealand.
Wines made from Tramini can range from dry to off-dry, with some late harvest and dessert wine styles also present. These wines are prized for their vibrant aromatics and depth of flavor. Tramini pairs exceptionally well with spicy Asian cuisine, soft cheeses, cured meats, roasted poultry, and dishes featuring aromatic spices such as ginger and coriander, enhancing both the food and the wine's intrinsic character.
