Kövérszőlő is a distinctive, lesser-known white grape variety indigenous to Hungary, particularly thriving in the historic Tokaj wine region. Renowned for its natural richness, Kövérszőlő yields wines with a lush, full-bodied mouthfeel and expressive aromatics. The bouquet typically features notes of ripe apricot, honey, and sultana, sometimes accentuated by hints of juicy pear and candied citrus. On the palate, Kövérszőlő wines exhibit a harmonious balance between sweetness and acidity, often delivering flavors of baked apple, marmalade, delicate spice, and a gentle mineral undertone.
While its origins date back centuries in the Tokaj region, Kövérszőlő has also found a niche in parts of Transylvania (Romania), contributing to both traditional and modern winemaking. The variety is mostly used to produce dessert wines, especially as one of the permitted grapes in the celebrated Tokaji Aszú blends, where its richness complements Furmint and Hárslevelű. However, dry or off-dry expressions are occasionally crafted, emphasizing the grape’s aromatic complexity.
Ideal food pairings include foie gras, tangy blue cheeses, fruit tarts, or spiced poultry dishes, where Kövérszőlő’s vibrant acidity and sweetness create a refined gastronomic interplay.
