Renowned for its deep ruby color and distinctive aromatic profile, Mavrotragano wines exude intense aromas of ripe black cherries, wild berries, and plums, often accompanied by spicy notes of black pepper, cloves, and subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, these wines are full-bodied with firm yet refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and layers of dark fruit, licorice, and a touch of smokiness that contribute to a long, elegant finish.
The main viticultural region for Mavrotragano is Santorini, where the volcanic soils and maritime climate impart a unique minerality and complexity to the wines. More recently, small plantings have appeared in other parts of Greece, such as Paros and the Cyclades.
Mavrotragano is typically vinified as a varietal red wine, though some producers blend it for added complexity.
