Agiorgitiko is considered one of Greece’s most important red grape varieties, renowned for its versatility and deep character. Its aromatic profile is marked by layers of red and black fruits, such as cherry, raspberry, and plum, complemented by hints of black pepper, spices, and sometimes subtle notes of dried herbs or violets. On the palate, Agiorgitiko wines typically exhibit medium to full body, soft tannins, and refreshing acidity, resulting in a smooth yet structured mouthfeel.
This grape is primarily cultivated in the Nemea region of the Peloponnese, which is internationally recognized as the heartland of Agiorgitiko production. While Nemea is the focal point, the variety is also grown in other Greek regions in smaller quantities.
Agiorgitiko produces a range of wine styles from youthful, fruit-driven reds to robust, age-worthy examples, as well as elegant rosés and, occasionally, sweet wines. The wines’ approachable tannins and bright fruit make them particularly food-friendly.
Recommended food pairings include roasted lamb, grilled meats, tomato-based dishes, and hard cheeses. The grape’s balanced acidity and supple texture also complement Mediterranean cuisine, making Agiorgitiko a versatile choice for many meals.
