The grape variety Welschriesling

Welschriesling, despite its name, is unrelated to the noble Riesling grape and is celebrated for its bright, refreshing character. The varietal offers pronounced aromas of crisp green apple, citrus, white flowers, and sometimes hints of freshly cut grass or herbal undertones. On the palate, Welschriesling is typically light-bodied with high acidity, presenting flavors that recall lemon zest, pear, and occasionally a subtle minerality, making it a vibrant and zesty white wine.

This grape finds its finest expression in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly in Austria (notably in Styria and Lower Austria), Hungary, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Welschriesling wines can range from bone-dry, zippy styles to sweet, late-harvest or botrytized treats, especially renowned as “Auspicion” or “Eiswein” in Austria and Tokaji region of Hungary.

Its crisp acidity makes Welschriesling an ideal companion for light seafood dishes, fresh salads, and soft goat cheeses. The richer late-harvest versions pair delightfully with spicy Asian cuisine or fruit-based desserts. Welschriesling’s versatility ensures it holds a valued place at the table, from casual sipping to refined gastronomy.
