Souzão is a distinctive red grape variety primarily associated with Portugal, most notably the Douro Valley and Dão regions, though it is also cultivated in South Africa, Australia, and select parts of California. Renowned for its deep color and intense character, Souzão wines are deeply colored, almost opaque, with bright acidity. The aromatic profile features robust notes of blackberries, plums, and black cherries, complemented by subtler layers of licorice, violets, earthy undertones, and a hint of spice. On the palate, Souzão offers a vibrant, juicy mouthfeel, marked by assertive tannins, brisk acidity, and a persistent finish.
Traditionally, Souzão plays a critical role in fortified Port blends, providing color, structure, and lively fruit components. Increasingly, it is also vinified as a single varietal wine or in dry red blends, producing bold, fruit-driven, and structured wines with aging potential.
Souzão pairs exceptionally well with roasted or grilled red meats, hearty stews, and game, as well as aged cheeses. It also complements richly seasoned dishes, such as slow-cooked lamb or smoked sausages, where its fresh acidity and tannic backbone enhance both flavor and balance on the palate.
