The grape variety Zweigelt

Zweigelt is Austria’s most widely planted red grape variety, celebrated for its vibrant character and versatility. In the glass, Zweigelt typically reveals a deep ruby color with enticing aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, often accented by subtle notes of violets, black pepper, and a touch of spice. On the palate, these wines are medium-bodied with lively acidity, soft tannins, and flavors that echo the nose, sometimes complemented by hints of plum and a gentle earthiness.

The primary growing region for Zweigelt is Austria, particularly in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) and Burgenland, where the grape thrives in both cool and warm microclimates. While Zweigelt is most commonly produced as a youthful, fruit-driven red, it also lends itself well to oak maturation and rosé styles, resulting in wines with increased complexity and aging potential.

Zweigelt’s approachable structure and fresh fruit profile make it exceptionally food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, grilled sausages, pork, mushroom-based dishes, and mildly spiced foods. Its balance of fruit and acidity also allows it to complement lighter Mediterranean fare and soft cheeses.
