Heida, also known as Savagnin Blanc, is a distinctive white grape variety highly regarded for its unique aromatic and flavor profile. Predominantly cultivated in the Swiss canton of Valais—most notably in the remote alpine vineyards of Visperterminen—Heida thrives in high altitudes, benefiting from intense sunlight and cool mountain breezes. The resulting wines exhibit vibrant acidity and a refined complexity. Aromatically, Heida offers expressive notes of citrus, green apple, and white peach, often complemented by hints of wild herbs, honey, and sometimes a flinty minerality. On the palate, it delivers a crisp, lively mouthfeel with flavors echoing its bouquet, accentuated by subtle nutty undertones in aged examples.
Heida is typically vinified as a dry or off-dry white wine, but may also be crafted into late harvest or dessert styles, which highlight its natural freshness and ability to retain acidity. The grape’s versatility allows it to pair beautifully with a wide range of dishes, including freshwater fish, shellfish, raclette and fondue, white meats with creamy sauces, and mature alpine cheeses. Its pronounced acidity and mineral backbone also make Heida an excellent companion for asparagus, artichoke, and other “difficult” vegetables.
