Trollinger, also known as Schiava in Italy, is a distinctive red grape variety predominantly grown in the Württemberg region of Germany. Renowned for its lively, fruit-forward character, Trollinger wines typically exhibit vibrant notes of strawberry, cherry, and red currant, often accented by delicate floral nuances and a hint of almond. On the palate, these wines are light-bodied with a crisp acidity and low tannin content, resulting in a refreshing and easy-drinking profile.
The grape thrives in cooler climates, particularly on the steep, sun-kissed slopes along the Neckar River. Outside of Germany, Trollinger is also found in the Alto Adige region of Northern Italy, where it is known as Vernatsch or Schiava.
Trollinger is primarily vinified as a youthful wine meant to be enjoyed fresh, although select bottlings may offer subtle complexity with short-term cellaring. These wines are versatile and pair well with a variety of dishes, including roasted poultry, grilled sausages, light charcuterie, vegetarian fare, and mild cheeses. Due to its bright acidity and fruitiness, Trollinger is especially suitable for casual gatherings and summer picnics.
