Meunier is a renowned black grape variety, primarily celebrated as one of the three main grapes used in Champagne blends. Known for its adaptability to cooler climates, Meunier imparts a distinctive aromatic profile marked by vibrant red fruits such as raspberry, strawberry, and cherry, often complemented by delicate floral notes and a subtle hint of earthy spice. On the palate, wines based on Meunier tend to be fresh and fruit-forward, with soft tannins, lively acidity, and a supple mouthfeel.
The grape thrives in France’s Champagne region, particularly the Marne Valley, but it is also found in England, Germany (as Schwarzriesling), and select regions in Australia and the United States. While most commonly vinified as part of Champagne blends, Meunier can also produce expressive single-varietal sparkling and still wines, distinguished by their early approachability and vibrant character.
Meunier-based wines pair exceptionally well with a range of dishes: their acidity and fruitiness enhance seafood, poultry, charcuterie, creamy cheeses, and light pasta dishes. They also offer versatile pairings with mildly spiced Asian cuisine and fresh salads, making them an excellent choice for contemporary dining experiences.
