Durella is an indigenous Italian white grape variety most closely associated with the Veneto region, particularly the hilly areas of Lessini. Renowned for its naturally high acidity, Durella produces wines with remarkable freshness and longevity. The aromatic profile is lively and distinctive, offering notes of green apple, citrus peel, lemon blossom, and often a subtle hint of flint or mineral undertones. On the palate, Durella wines are crisp and vibrant, characterized by racy acidity, light to medium body, and flavors echoing their citrus-driven bouquet with an elegant, saline finish.
This grape is most famously the basis for Lessini Durello DOC, especially as a sparkling wine made by both the Charmat and traditional methods. In its sparkling form, Durella offers energetic bubbles and a thirst-quenching, zesty complexity. Still wines, though less common, present a lean and refreshingly tart structure.
Durella’s pronounced acidity makes it an excellent partner for a variety of foods. It pairs beautifully with seafood, especially oysters and shellfish, as well as sushi, fried fish, and young goat cheeses. Its vibrancy also complements vegetable tempura or light poultry dishes, enhancing the flavors while cleansing the palate.
