Raboso Piave is a historic red grape variety indigenous to northeastern Italy, particularly thriving along the banks of the Piave River in the Veneto region. Known for producing wines with vibrant acidity, robust tannins, and deep color, Raboso Piave offers a distinctive and expressive profile. Aromatically, wines made from this grape reveal notes of wild cherry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by subtle hints of violet, spice, and earthy undertones. On the palate, Raboso Piave is characterized by its lively freshness, full body, and a lingering, slightly bitter finish, making it both complex and age-worthy.
The grape is primarily cultivated in the Piave DOC, with significant plantings found in the Treviso province. Although often vinified as a varietal, Raboso Piave is sometimes blended to add structure and longevity to local wines. Typical wine styles include both still and sparkling versions, ranging from youthful, fruit-forward interpretations to more mature, oak-aged examples displaying depth and elegance.
Raboso Piave pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as roasted meats, game, aged cheeses, and traditional Venetian fare like duck ragù. Its bold structure and refreshing acidity make it an excellent companion for rich, flavorful cuisine.
