Zibibbo, also known as Muscat of Alexandria, is a distinctive grape variety celebrated for its intensely aromatic profile. It displays vibrant notes of orange blossom, jasmine, rose petals, and ripe stone fruits such as apricot and peach, both on the nose and palate. Subtle undertones of honey and Mediterranean herbs often enhance its complexity, while a lively acidity balances its natural sweetness.
This ancient grape thrives primarily in Sicily, particularly on the island of Pantelleria, where volcanic soils and warm, sun-drenched climate enable exceptional quality. Other Mediterranean regions such as southern Italy and North Africa also cultivate Zibibbo to a lesser extent.
Zibibbo is traditionally crafted into aromatic sweet wines—including the renowned Passito di Pantelleria—through drying grapes on mats to concentrate flavors and sugars. However, dry and sparkling styles are also produced, displaying the variety’s aromatic intensity and freshness.
Pair sweet Zibibbo wines with blue cheese, ripe peaches, or Sicilian pastry desserts like cannoli. Dry examples make excellent companions to grilled seafood, spicy Asian cuisine, or aromatic salads. The grape’s opulent aromatics and versatile structure offer a memorable experience across diverse culinary pairings.
