Carricante is an indigenous white grape variety from Sicily, primarily cultivated on the slopes of Mount Etna. Renowned for its refined aromatic profile, Carricante offers vibrant citrus notes—lemon, grapefruit, and orange blossom—accompanied by green apple, white peach, and subtle herbal undertones. Mineral nuances, often reminiscent of wet stone or salty sea breeze, are characteristic and stem from volcanic soils.
The Etna DOC region is the heartland of Carricante, particularly in the eastern and southern sectors of the volcano, where altitude imparts exceptional freshness and complexity. Winemakers craft both monovarietal wines and blends (sometimes with Catarratto), focusing predominantly on dry white wines, though some sparkling styles exist.
Carricante wines are typically light to medium-bodied with lively acidity, enabling notable aging potential. On the palate, these wines are crisp, with pronounced minerality and a lingering, citrus-driven finish.
Carricante pairs seamlessly with seafood, such as grilled prawns, oysters, and seared scallops. It also complements Mediterranean cuisine, including lemon-herb chicken, vegetable risotto, and fresh goat cheese. The grape’s brightness and structure beautifully balance both delicate and richly flavored dishes.
