Inzolia, also known as Ansonica, is a distinguished white grape variety hailing predominantly from Sicily and parts of Tuscany. Celebrated for its vibrant aromatics, Inzolia wines typically display a fresh bouquet of citrus blossom, green apple, and subtle notes of almond and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, these wines are generally medium-bodied, offering a pleasing balance of crisp acidity and a faint, characteristic saline minerality. Sometimes, there are hints of tropical fruit or stone fruit, contributing to a lingering, clean finish.
The principal regions for Inzolia cultivation are western and southern Sicily, particularly in the provinces of Trapani, Agrigento, and Palermo. It is also significant in the coastal vineyards of Tuscany, most notably on the island of Elba.
While Inzolia is often vinified as a dry, unoaked white wine, it can be found in blends (notably in Sicily’s Marsala DOC) or occasionally as a richer, barrel-aged style. Its freshness and gentle savory notes make it a versatile partner for seafood, grilled shellfish, light pasta dishes, and Mediterranean salads. Inzolia also complements mild cheeses and lightly spiced white meats, enhancing meals with its elegant, food-friendly character.
