The grape variety Catarratto

Catarratto is a historic white grape variety native to Sicily, and one of Italy’s most widely planted white grapes. Known for producing wines with a distinctive aromatic profile, Catarratto expresses refreshing citrus notes such as lemon and grapefruit, complemented by hints of green apple, white peach, and often a subtle floral undertone. On the palate, these wines are typically medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a pleasantly clean, slightly almond-tinged finish.

Catarratto thrives in Sicily, particularly in the provinces of Trapani, Palermo, and Agrigento. The grape forms the backbone of many Sicilian whites, both varietal and blends, and is a key component in DOC wines such as Sicilia DOC and Alcamo DOC.

Stylistically, Catarratto wines range from light, fresh, and unoaked—a perfect reflection of Mediterranean sunshine—to more structured, textured examples with brief aging on lees or in oak, enhancing complexity without overwhelming the natural vibrancy.

Catarratto’s lively acidity and fruit-forward profile make it an excellent pairing with a wide variety of dishes. It complements shellfish, grilled seafood, light pasta with vegetables, and mild cheeses; it also pairs well with Sicilian favorites like caponata and arancini.
